Concrete vs Vinyl Seawalls
If you are replacing a wall or building a new one, this is one of the first questions a contractor will raise. Here is what genuinely differs between the two systems — and what does not.
The two systems
Both systems do the same job: a line of vertical elements driven into the ground, retaining soil and resisting water pressure, usually tied together by a concrete cap and, in many designs, restrained by tiebacks. What differs is the panel itself — its material, thickness, stiffness, weight and how it behaves over decades in salt water.

What should actually drive the choice
- Design requirements. Retained height, water depth and loading determine what the structure has to do before material enters the conversation.
- Neighbouring walls. How your wall ties into the walls either side is a practical constraint, and a mismatch at the tie-in can create its own problems.
- Access. What equipment can reach the shoreline affects what is realistic.
- Soil conditions. What drives cleanly at your property may not at the next.
- Anchoring design. Panel flexibility interacts with how the wall is restrained.
- Regulatory requirements. Whatever the applicable approvals require takes precedence over preference.
- Budget and horizon. How long you intend to hold the property is a legitimate input.
