Seawall Cap Repair
The cap is the most visible part of a seawall and the part owners judge the wall by. It is also frequently the part that shows the earliest evidence of what is happening elsewhere in the structure.
What the cap is doing
The cap is a continuous concrete beam cast along the top of the panels. It locks the tops of the panels into a single line, spreads load along the wall rather than letting individual panels act alone, and in tieback designs it is commonly where the anchor rods terminate. It also takes the direct abuse: sun, rain, salt spray, foot traffic, dock hardware, and the occasional boat.

Why caps deteriorate in Florida
- Salt exposure in a wetting-and-drying zone, which is aggressive toward reinforced concrete
- Corrosion of embedded steel, which expands and pushes concrete off from the inside
- Thermal and moisture cycling in an exposed horizontal element
- Impact damage from vessels, dock hardware and equipment
- Movement of the panels below transferring stress into the cap
- Water penetrating the top surface and reaching reinforcement
Repair versus cap replacement
Localized repair — removing deteriorated concrete, treating exposed reinforcement and rebuilding the section — is common where damage is contained and the wall below is sound. Cap replacement over a run is considered where deterioration is continuous, where corrosion is widespread, or where the cap has lost its connection to the panels.
In both cases the decision follows an assessment of the panels, alignment and anchoring, because the cap's condition is often a consequence of theirs.
