Cracked Seawall and Cap

Cracking is the most photographed seawall symptom and the most frequently misread. Some of it means very little; some of it is the visible end of a corrosion or movement problem.

Cosmetic or structural: what actually distinguishes them

There is no crack-width rule that settles this, and any site giving you one is oversimplifying. What professionals read is the combination:

  • Pattern. Isolated and random reads differently from regular cracks at consistent spacing.
  • Location. A crack directly above an open joint is telling you about the joint.
  • Depth and continuity. Surface distress differs from a crack passing through the element.
  • Associated evidence. Rust staining, spalling or displacement change the reading entirely.
  • Change over time. A crack that is lengthening or widening is active.
  • Context. Whether the wall is straight, and whether the ground behind it has settled.

Signs that raise the priority

  • Exposed or rusting reinforcement anywhere on the cap or panels
  • Concrete that sounds hollow when tapped, or that flakes away by hand
  • Cracks that align with open joints or with a change in the wall's line
  • Cracking accompanied by settlement of the ground behind the wall
  • Cracks that have measurably lengthened or widened since you last looked
  • Cracking in a wall that is also leaning or bowing
  • Water weeping through a crack in the wall face

What happens next

  1. Photograph each crack with something for scale, and record the date.
  2. Note whether it aligns with a joint, a repair, or a section of wall that looks different.
  3. Check the ground behind that section for softness or settlement.
  4. Sight along the cap to check the wall is still straight at that location.
  5. Have it assessed before sealing or covering anything.

Frequently asked

Are cracks in a seawall normal?
Some surface cracking is common in concrete exposed to a marine environment and does not necessarily indicate a structural problem. Other cracking is a symptom of corrosion, movement or loading. The distinction depends on pattern, width, location and whether it is changing.
Should I seal a crack in my seawall myself?
Sealing a crack whose cause has not been established can hide the evidence someone would use to diagnose it, and it does not address movement or corrosion. It is worth having the crack looked at before covering it.
Does cracking mean my seawall needs replacing?
Not by itself. Cracking is one input among several. Extent, pattern, alignment of the wall and the condition of the panels and anchoring all feed into that decision.
