Leaning or Bowing Seawall
Movement is the symptom that most often changes the conversation from repair to replacement — and the one where guessing is least useful, because the causes are almost entirely out of sight.

What movement looks like
- Leaning. The whole wall, or a length of it, tilted toward the water. Easiest to see by sighting along the cap line from one end.
- Bowing. A section pushed outward in the middle while the ends stay closer to their original line.
- Panel misalignment. Individual panels sitting proud of or behind their neighbours.
- Rotation. The top moving out further than the base, which typically shows as joints wider at the top than the bottom.
- Differential movement. One run moving while the adjacent run does not, creating a visible step or kink.
What can cause it

| Storm events | Surge and wave energy load the structure well beyond everyday conditions |
Is it still moving?
Whether movement is active or historic matters a great deal, and it is one of the few things an owner can help establish. A wall that moved twenty years ago and has been stable since is a different proposition from one moving now.
Establishing whether movement is ongoing
- Take dated photographs from fixed positions you can repeat exactly
- Note whether joint gaps are widening between observations
- Watch for new cracking in the cap, or existing cracks lengthening
- Watch for fresh settlement behind the wall
- Note whether previous repairs have reopened
- Ask a professional about formal monitoring if the picture is unclear
Assessment, then options
Assessment normally covers alignment measurement along the wall, examination of the cap and panels, investigation of the anchoring system where accessible, evaluation of the soil behind the wall, and observation of conditions at the toe where possible.
What follows depends entirely on what is found. Stabilisation and anchoring work is realistic for some walls. For others — particularly where movement is combined with widespread material deterioration — replacement is the direction that gets evaluated.
